Used to introduce a statement that contrasts with or seems unexpected compared to what was just said. It means 'but' or 'yet'.
“The apartment is close to my workplace. However, the rent is quite high.”
“I usually enjoy action movies. However, the one we watched last night was too violent for my taste.”
In CELPIP Writing, use 'however' to smoothly connect two contrasting ideas in your paragraph or to show a different perspective in a survey or chart description. In Speaking, use it to sound more natural when you want to disagree politely or present an alternative viewpoint, e.g., 'Some people prefer working from home. However, others find it more productive to work in an office.'
Synonyms: but, nevertheless, yet
