The CELPIP Speaking test has 8 tasks and takes about 15 to 20 minutes. You record every answer on the computer, and each response is scored on content and coherence, vocabulary, listenability and task fulfillment. You get a CLB level from 1 to 12. Always confirm timings on the official CELPIP test format page.
| Task | What you do | Preparation | Speaking time |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Giving advice | 30 sec | 90 sec |
| 2 | Talking about a personal experience | 30 sec | 60 sec |
| 3 | Describing a scene | 30 sec | 60 sec |
| 4 | Making predictions | 30 sec | 60 sec |
| 5 | Comparing and persuading | 60 sec | 60 sec |
| 6 | Dealing with a difficult situation | 60 sec | 60 sec |
| 7 | Expressing opinions | 30 sec | 90 sec |
| 8 | Describing an unusual situation | 30 sec | 60 sec |
Each response is rated on four areas: content and coherence (are your ideas relevant, organised and complete), vocabulary (range and accuracy of words), listenability (pronunciation, rhythm and how easy you are to follow), and task fulfillment (did you do what the prompt asked, in the time given). A clear structure with a short opening, two or three supported points and a quick closing sentence helps in all four areas.
Canadian citizenship asks for CLB 4 in speaking and listening. The Federal Skilled Worker Program needs CLB 7 in every skill, and Express Entry awards more points as your level rises, up to CLB 10. Check the current before you set a target.
Use the preparation time to note two or three key points rather than full sentences, then speak for the whole time allowed. Practise one task type at a time, review the AI feedback on each recording, and repeat weak tasks.
