Used to clearly express strong disagreement with an idea, action, or policy.
“I am firmly opposed to raising public transit fares during an economic downturn.”
“I am firmly opposed to allowing cellphones in the classroom during lessons.”
Use this phrase in Speaking Task 7 when the topic asks you to disagree with a statement or take the opposing side of a debate. Stating your opposition clearly and early helps the rater follow your argument, since CELPIP raters listen for a consistent, well-supported stance throughout the response. Back it up with at least one reason right after.
Synonyms: I strongly disagree with, I am firmly against, I oppose
