To believe that something will happen because it seems likely or planned.

Example

“I expect the restaurant will get a lot busier around lunchtime.”

“Based on his expression, I expect he'll ask for a refund.”

CELPIP Tip

'Expect' is one of the most common and reliable prediction verbs for Task 4, so use it confidently in sentences like 'I expect the man will apologize.' It's simple, correct in almost every context, and clearly signals to the examiner that you're making a future prediction, which is exactly what the task requires.
