In CELPIP Speaking Task 3 (or Writing Task 1), you can use 'contend' to present a strong opinion or to describe a competition in a survey or chart. For example, in a speaking response about an opinion question, say: 'Some people contend that online shopping is more convenient, but I believe it has downsides.' This shows advanced vocabulary and clear argumentation.
