Having a flat, dull surface with no shine.
“Unlike most phone cases, this one has a matte black finish.”
“The surface is matte, so it doesn't reflect any light at all.”
Use 'matte' to contrast with shinier surfaces when describing an object's texture in Task 8, showing the examiner you can compare different qualities of the same item. It's a short, easy word to pronounce under time pressure, unlike some longer texture adjectives. Try combining it with color, as in 'it has a matte black finish.'
Synonyms: dull, flat, non-shiny
