Section 1: Welcome & Your First Test
The CELPIP Writing test is a computer-based assessment with two tasks completed in 60 minutes total. Both tasks are based on everyday situations in a workplace or community setting.
1. Test Structure & Timing
Task 1 — Writing an Email
Time allowed: 27 minutes
You are given a prompt with 3–4 bullet points and must write an email addressing each one.
Task 2 — Responding to a Survey
Time allowed: 26 minutes
You choose between two options and write a response explaining your reasons.
2. Word Count Requirements
Requirement | Details |
|---|---|
Target Range | 150–200 words per task |
Risk Zone (too short) | Below 135 words |
Risk Zone (too long) | Above 220 words |
Word Counter | Live counter visible on screen while you type |
3. Scoring Criteria
Your writing is rated across four areas:
Content & Coherence
How well your ideas are developed, supported, and organized.
Vocabulary
How naturally and accurately you use a range of words and phrases.
Readability
Grammar, spelling, punctuation, sentence variety, and transitions.
Task Fulfillment
Whether you followed all instructions, stayed on topic, and used the right tone.
4. Computer Tools Available
Timer
A clock in the top right corner shows your remaining time for each task.
Spellcheck
Misspelled words are underlined in red — but it will not catch wrong word choices like writing "quite" instead of "quiet".
5. Top Tips for Success
Plan before you type
Spend 3–4 minutes brainstorming and outlining before you start writing.
Use your own words
Avoid copying phrases from the prompt. Paraphrasing shows a higher level of English.
Be specific
Use precise details — names, places, reasons — instead of vague general statements.
Use paragraphs
Divide your ideas into clear paragraphs to make your writing easy to follow.
