Effective planning is a critical step in achieving a high score on the CELPIP Writing test. Instead of typing immediately, dedicate the first 3 to 4 minutes to brainstorming and organizing your thoughts. This preparation allows you to focus more effectively on your grammar and vocabulary once you begin typing.
1. Use the Provided Planning Tools
At the test center, you are provided with scratch paper and a pen. Use these to create a brief outline of your main ideas and supporting details. Having a physical outline to refer to as you type helps you stay on topic and prevents you from veering off into irrelevant information.
2. Brainstorm Specific Details
Because test prompts are intentionally general, your job is to make them specific and precise.
Visualize Real Places
Imagine the situation is happening in a place you know well — it does not have to be a city in Canada. Using names of real streets, libraries, or local landmarks can help you generate natural vocabulary.
Create a Persona
Decide "who you are" in the situation. For example, if writing about a library, decide if you are a student, a parent with young children, or a retired person — this will shape the reasons you provide in your response.
Avoid Repetition
Planning your ideas in advance ensures that every sentence says something new and that you do not simply repeat the same points or copy language directly from the prompt.
3. Outline Your Structure
Your outline should clearly define the structure of your response to ensure a logical flow.
For Task 1 — Writing an Email
Plan for an introduction that states the purpose of your writing, followed by separate paragraphs for each bullet point in the prompt. End with a concluding statement and a professional sign-off.
For Task 2 — Responding to a Survey
Choose your option quickly — within about 30 seconds — and stick with it. Identify at least two or three strong reasons for your choice by looking closely at the details in the survey options and expanding on them with your own examples.
4. Follow a Time Management Plan
A successful strategy for Task 1 (27 minutes) typically follows this schedule:
Time | Activity |
|---|---|
45 seconds | Read the prompt and instructions carefully |
3 minutes | Brainstorm and create your outline on paper |
20 minutes | Write your response based on your outline |
3 minutes | Proofread for grammar, spelling, and word count |
