Part 2 is the most visually distinct part of the CELPIP Reading test. Instead of a written text, you are presented with a diagram — which might be a timetable or schedule, a route map, a program brochure, a fee structure chart, a flowchart, a floor plan, or a menu of services. Following the diagram, you answer 8 questions plus a short drop-down reply. You have approximately 9 minutes.
Part 2 is often described by candidates as "easier" than Parts 3 and 4, and in some ways it is — the information is organized visually rather than requiring you to extract meaning from dense paragraphs. However, Part 2 has its own specific traps that regularly catch candidates who approach it without a disciplined routine. The most common trap is answering from the main body of the diagram while ignoring footnotes and exceptions that change the correct answer. This lesson gives you a foolproof system that eliminates that trap entirely.
Types of Diagrams You Will Encounter
While you cannot predict which exact diagram will appear on your test, CELPIP uses a consistent set of diagram types. Understanding what each type tests helps you prepare more efficiently.
Timetables and Schedules
These show times, days, routes, or session availability, often with different rules for different time slots or days of the week. The key challenges are: reading column and row headers accurately, applying time-based conditions (before/after a specific time, weekdays vs. weekends), and identifying footnotes that create exceptions to the main grid.
Fee and Service Charts
These show prices, membership tiers, eligibility levels, or service options for different categories of people (adults, seniors, children, members, non-members). The key challenges are: identifying which category applies to the person in the question, applying quantity conditions (number of people, number of visits), and finding discount or surcharge footnotes.
Maps and Route Diagrams
These show physical locations, directions, or transit routes. The key challenges are: identifying directional conditions (eastbound, southbound), reading distance or travel time labels accurately, and applying restrictions shown in the legend.
Program Brochures and Flowcharts
These describe the steps or requirements of a process, program, or application. The key challenges are: following the correct path through the flowchart based on the person's situation, and identifying which conditions lead to which outcomes.
The Most Important Rule: Legend and Footnotes Before Everything
This is the single most important rule for Part 2 and the one most often violated by test-takers who are trying to save time. Footnotes and legends frequently contain exceptions that override the main body of the diagram. An answer that seems correct based on the main table is often wrong because a footnote changes the rule for the specific conditions in the question.
What to Look for in the First 30 Seconds
Before reading a single question, spend exactly 30 seconds doing the following:
- Read the title — this tells you what the diagram represents and what kind of information it contains.
- Read all column and row headers — these define what each axis of the diagram measures (time, category, service type, day of week, etc.).
- Read all footnotes — look for asterisks, numbered notes, or small text beneath the main diagram. These contain exceptions, surcharges, restrictions, and additional conditions that directly affect the answers.
- Identify the units — is time shown in minutes or hours? Are distances in kilometers or minutes of travel? Is cost in dollars per person or per group? Misreading units is a common and costly error.
- Note any special symbols, shading, or visual markers — colored cells, N/A markers, or dashes often signal that a service or option is not available under certain conditions.
Step 2 — Answering Single-Constraint Questions
Single-constraint questions give you one condition to apply: "Which bus route goes to the airport?" or "What is the fee for a senior member?" These are the most straightforward questions in Part 2. With your legend and headers understood, you can answer each of these in under 45 seconds.
For every single-constraint question:
- Identify the single condition in the question (the one variable being asked about).
- Locate the row, column, or section of the diagram that matches that condition.
- Read the value in the relevant cell.
- Verify that no footnote modifies this cell for the given condition.
- Match the value to an answer option.
Bank these questions quickly. Every single-constraint question answered in under 45 seconds gives you extra time for the multi-constraint questions, which are more time-consuming.
Step 3 — The Constraint String Method for Multi-Condition Questions
Multi-constraint questions are the most challenging in Part 2. They give you two, three, or even four conditions that must all be satisfied simultaneously. For example: "Maria wants to visit on a Saturday, arrive after 6:00 pm, and bring her two children under age 10. Which ticket option is available to her?"
Trying to hold multiple conditions in your memory while scanning the diagram leads to errors. The constraint string method eliminates this problem by making your conditions explicit before you look at the diagram.
How to Build a Constraint String
- Read the question and extract every condition: day of week, time of day, number of people, age category, membership status, distance, direction, etc.
- Write them as a concise string on your notepad, for example: Saturday + after 6:00 pm + 2 children under 10
- Now scan the diagram and eliminate every option or cell that fails even one condition in your string.
- The correct answer is the only option that satisfies every condition in your string simultaneously.
This approach prevents the most common multi-constraint error: finding an option that satisfies two out of three conditions and selecting it without checking the third.
Footnote Verification After Building Your Constraint String
Once you have identified a potential answer using your constraint string, make one final check: does any footnote in the diagram create an exception for any of your conditions? For example, your constraint string leads you to "Option B," but a footnote says "Option B not available for groups of more than 3 on weekends." If your scenario involves a weekend visit with a group of 4, Option B is wrong. This final footnote check is the step that most test-takers skip — and it is the step that determines whether you get the hard questions right.
Step 4 — Completing the Reply Drop-Downs
Part 2 ends with a short written reply that has drop-down blanks. This reply is usually from the person in the scenario to someone else, describing or confirming the options they have found in the diagram. Apply the same four-step sequence from Part 1: Meaning → Tone → Strength → Grammar.
The specific traps in Part 2 drop-down replies are:
- Confusing the diagram's options — make sure your drop-down choices correctly reflect the specific option identified in the diagram, not a similar but different one.
- Getting the numbers wrong — verify that times, fees, quantities, and dates in your drop-down match the diagram exactly. Distractors often change a single number.
- Tone mismatch — the reply is usually informal or semi-formal (often a message to a friend or colleague). Avoid overly formal or bureaucratic language in the drop-down options.

The "Feels Obvious" Warning
If a Part 2 question feels immediately obvious — if you look at the diagram and the answer seems to jump out at you in under 5 seconds — this is a signal to slow down and check for a footnote trap. CELPIP designers intentionally place a footnote exception on questions that appear to have obvious answers. The "obvious" answer is the wrong one; the correct answer incorporates the footnote. This does not mean you should second-guess every easy question — only the ones that feel instantly obvious without any verification.
Unit and Label Verification
Before confirming any answer involving a number, verify two things:
- The unit is correct — the answer option says "30 minutes" but the diagram shows "0.5 hours" — these are the same, so the answer is valid. But if the option says "30 kilometers" and the diagram shows "30 minutes," the unit is wrong and the answer is incorrect.
- The direction is correct — for questions involving more/less, higher/lower, before/after — confirm the answer option preserves the correct direction (not "at least 3" when the text says "no more than 3").
